Have you ever wanted to bring a tiny forest into your home? A moss terrarium is the perfect way to do it — no green thumb required.
What You'll Need
- A clear glass globe or bowl
- Activated charcoal (for drainage)
- Terrarium soil mix
- Live moss (sheet moss or cushion moss work best)
- Small stones or pebbles
- Tweezers and a spray bottle
Step 1: Layer Your Base
Start with a 1-inch layer of small stones for drainage, followed by a thin layer of activated charcoal to keep the ecosystem fresh. Add 2–3 inches of terrarium soil on top.
Step 2: Place Your Moss
Gently press your live moss into the soil, making sure the roots make full contact. Arrange it naturally — don't be too perfect, nature isn't!
Step 3: Add Decorative Elements
Place small stones, driftwood, or miniature figurines to create a scene that feels alive.
Step 4: Mist and Seal
Lightly mist the inside with water, then seal your terrarium. The moisture will cycle naturally — you'll rarely need to water it again.
Care Tips
- Place in indirect sunlight
- Open the lid once a week for 30 minutes to allow air circulation
- If condensation disappears, add a few sprays of water
