Moss Care

Why Is My Moss Turning Brown? 6 Fixes

In short

Brown or yellow patches usually come from one of six causes. Here is how to spot which one, and what to do about it.

A few brown tips are not the end of your moss. Most of the time the cause is simple and the fix is, too. Work through these six one by one.

1 · Too dry

Looks like: pale, crisp, curled tips. Fix: mist evenly and keep an eye on it for a few days.

2 · Too wet

Looks like: dark, soggy patches and water pooling at the bottom. Fix: open the lid for a day, dab out standing water with a paper towel and mist less often.

3 · Too much direct sun

Looks like: bleached or brown spots on the side facing the window. Fix: move it a little further from the glass or behind a sheer curtain.

4 · Not enough light

Looks like: slow, dull colour over weeks. Fix: give it a brighter spot with indirect light, or a small grow light.

5 · No air at all

Looks like: a musty smell or fuzzy white spots. Fix: lift the lid for an hour every few days and remove any fuzzy pieces with tweezers.

6 · Heat

Looks like: browning after a warm spell or near a radiator. Fix: move it to a cooler place, away from heaters and electronics.

Q: Should I cut the brown bits off?

A: Trim pieces that are clearly mushy or fuzzy. Dry brown tips can stay while you fix the cause.

Q: Can I add fresh moss over a bad patch?

A: Yes. Lift the patch out with tweezers, press a fresh piece into the soil and mist it.

Rule of thumb: change one thing at a time, then give it a week.
