Live Moss Q&A: 10 Questions New Owners Ask

In short

Straight answers to the questions people ask most after their moss arrives, from why it looks dry to how to store it.

Got moss and a few questions? You are not alone. These are the ten we hear most, answered short.

Q: Is this real, living moss?

A: Yes. It is real live moss, not dried or preserved.

Q: Why does it look dry when it arrives?

A: Our Duo Pack page explains that the moss ships dry and dormant on purpose, to stay clean in transit.

Q: How do I wake it up?

A: Mist it generously or soak it lightly. The Duo Pack page says it rehydrates within 30–60 minutes.

Q: Can I keep it before using it?

A: Store it in a shaded, dry place below 73°F (23°C). The Duo Pack page says up to 2 months.

Q: Does it need soil?

A: Moss sits on top and grips the surface. In a terrarium, press it onto soil so it makes good contact.

Q: How much light?

A: Bright, indirect light. Avoid hot direct sun through glass.

Q: Open or closed container?

A: Both work. Closed containers hold moisture longer; open ones need misting more often.

Q: Can I use it for reptiles?

A: Yes — see our Reptile 3-Pack and guide below.

Q: Will it grow?

A: Live moss can keep growing with the right humidity and light, but it grows slowly.

Q: What is the most common mistake?

A: Too much water in a closed container. Mist lightly and adjust.
