Your First Grow-Light Terrarium, Step by Step

In short

Build a lit glass landscape in five calm steps: pebbles, soil, driftwood, moss and a flexible LED grow light.

A grow-light terrarium is a small landscape with its own lamp. It is great for desks and shelves where daylight is weak. Here is the order we use.

Before you start

Lay out the planting mat and open everything. The Grow-Light kit includes soil mix, pebbles, driftwood, moss, tweezers, mini shovels, a spray bottle, a watering bottle and an air blower.

Step 1 · Pebbles

Add a thin, even layer of pebbles to the bottom of the glass. It gives the build a clean base line you can see from the side.

Step 2 · Soil

Spoon in soil mix with a mini shovel and shape a gentle slope — higher at the back.

Step 3 · Driftwood

Press the driftwood in at an angle. It becomes the "tree" or "rock" the rest of the scene grows around.

Step 4 · Moss

Mist the moss first, then press pieces around the driftwood with tweezers. Use the air blower to clear soil dust off the leaves and glass.

Step 5 · Light

Clip on the flexible LED grow light and angle it over the moss. It brightens the scene and keeps it visible in low-light corners.

Q: Where should it sit?

A: Anywhere you can see it — a desk, counter or shelf. Keep it out of hot direct sun.
